MAROONS MAKE SIGNINGS OFFICIAL
CHAMPAIGN — Normally, a few kids bask in the spotlight on Signing Day at Champaign Central, signing their Division I letters of intent along with a small contingent of elite athletes.
This year, that’s not the case.
Seven athletes who played sports for Central this year or last signed letters of intent Tuesday.
“I don’t know if we’ve ever had seven Division I kids sign in November,” Central athletic director John Woods said. “I don’t know if we’ve ever had seven Division I players sign in one class.”
Three players from Central’s baseball team signed Tuesday. Joe Aeilts signed with Illinois State, Alec Barger with Northern Illinois and Jake Snider with Louisville. Snider transferred to a school in Louisville, Ky., this year after his father, former Illinois assistant Eric, took a job at Louisville last year.
“It’s just a great group of kids,” Woods said.
Two volleyball players signed — Maddie LeGrande at College of Charleston and Dana Westfield at Temple — and Nick Finke signed to play basketball for Army. The day was a particularly special one for Woods, whose son, Payton, signed to swim at Michigan State.
“It’s so neat to always preach about hard work and investment, (saying) ‘One day it’ll pay off,’ ” Woods said. “When you’ve got the blood, sweat and tears going, it sometimes seems the payoff is never going to happen. Going to Michigan State swimming doesn’t mean his work is done. It just is a small reward for what he has worked so hard to accomplish.”
