DOGS GRIND OUT 3-2 WIN OVER GROVE
MIAMI — Scoring all three runs with ground-ball outs, Miami squeezed past Grove 3-2 Tuesday, April 3 at Joe Pollock Field.
That gave the Wardogs a split of their two-game District 4A-8 series with Grove.
The Ridgerunners had posted a 7-1 win Monday, April 2.
“It was a great win for our guys,” Miami coach Jeremy Strack said. “Limiting big innings was huge and Brant Morris really competed on the mound. Our offensive execution was what we needed it to be.
“We also limited our strikeouts, which had been a problem area for us offensively.”
Drew Williams picked up two of the three RBIs with ground-ball outs.
In the fifth, Gabe McCleary and Folks had back-to-back bunt singles then Yoshihiro Shinzato pushed in the deciding run with a grounder.
Miami took a 1-0 lead in the first then both teams scored single runs in the fifth.
Grove had a runner at third in the sixth but couldn’t score.
Then in the seventh, Caleb Keener hit into a fielder’s choice to erase Collin Craig with the second out and then Toby Cearley grounded out to end the game.
Morris turned in a complete-game victory for the Wardogs. He had three strikeouts and walked one.
Conner Womack collected a double and two bunt singles for Miami.
Caden Folks added two singles and McCleary chipped in with a base hit.
Cearley and Keener had two singles each for the Ridgerunners.
