McDonald County struck first with runs in the second and third, then Grove scored three in the fourth and one in the fifth to grab a 4-2 lead. The Mustangs closed out the scoring in the seventh. With two outs in the second, third baseman Isak Johnson put the Mustangs on the board with a solo home run to left center. In the McDonald County third, Ty Shaver singled with two outs, stole second, reached third on a single, and scored on an error. Grove scored their three unearned runs in the fourth and Kaleb Keener collected a RBI single. With a 3-2 lead, Grove’s Tyler Davis provided an insurance run with a solo home run. Oakley Roessler doubled in the McDonald County seventh and courtesy runner Koby McAlister scored on a Shaver single. The Mustangs scored their run with two outs, then Boston Dowd grounded out 6-3 to end the game. Shaver led the Mustangs with a pair of hits, while Dowd, Johnson, Micah Burkholder, and Roessler each had one of the other four hits against Grove pitchers Jack Gentry and Cade Coble. Shaver scored and drove in a run and stole two bases. Gentry earned the win, allowing two runs (one earned) on four hits over five innings. He struck out eight and walked three. Coble earned the save, allowing one run (unearned) on two hits over two innings; he struck out two and walked none. Roessler pitched a scoreless seventh for the Mustangs. Offensively, Chat Hayes and Keener led the Ridgerunners with two hits each, while Davis and Braxton Pennington each had one. Davis worked a pair of walks and scored two runs. McDonald County — 2-3 overall this season — returned to action Monday against Shiloh Christian and the Mustangs travel Tuesday to Carthage.
