NO. 2 LADY TIGERS TOP GROVE

Delaney Nix, Kloe Bowin and Taya Green each scored in double figures to help carry Tahlequah to a 64-56 road win over Grove Friday night. The Class 5A, second-ranked Lady Tigers, now 2-0 to start the season under head coach David Qualls, received a game-high 23 points from Nix, their standout senior point guard. Nix sparked a 9-0 run over the first five minutes of the second quarter and had 10 of her points in the quarter. The West Texas A&M signee knocked down two her three 3-pointers in the key run to give Tahlequah a 25-16 lead and Grove would never get even the remainder of the contest. Bowin ended with 12 points for the Lady Tigers, which will play their third straight road game to begin the season when they travel to Skiatook next Tuesday. Green finished with 10 points. "We talked about this maybe being a trap game for us," Qualls said. "We won here last year, but previous to that we hadn't won here in probably 10 to 12 years. Grove is historically a tough place to play, and it was loud and a great atmosphere tonight. "They jumped on us early, but I was pleased to see the mental toughness early on after kind of taking a haymaker. I was pleased with the way we responded to that by going on the big run there in the second quarter." Tahlequah led 31-23 at halftime and took a 49-39 advantage into the final eight minutes. Grove (1-1), which built an early 8-3 lead, never got closer than seven points in the fourth quarter. "Down the stretch we were able to maintain our lead, and we were better than what we were against Pryor," Qualls said. "We still need to do a better job of rebounding. If we can rebound we can play with anybody out there and we can beat anybody." Senior guard Sierra N. Smith converted all four of her free throw attempts over the final two minutes to seal the win and contributed with nine points. Sierra L. Smith, who had a game-high 18 points in Tahlequah's 49-37 season-opening win over No. 6 Pryor on Tuesday, closed with eight points, all of those coming during the first quarter. The Lady Tigers connected on seven 3-pointers, led by Nix's three. Sierra L. Smith buried a pair of treys, while Sierra N. Smith and Green had one each. Tahlequah was 15-of-24 from the free throw line. Nix converted on six of her 10 tries. Senior Kennedy Davis rounded out the scoring with two points. Grove was led by sophomore Macee Barnes' 17 points. Freshman Rory Geer followed with 16. Following their trip to 13th-ranked Skiatook (0-2), the Lady Tigers will host the Cherokee Nation Businesses Tahlequah Tiger Invitational beginning Thursday. The three-day tournament concludes on Saturday.
