GROVE'S WERNER WINS 2ND RACE OF SEASON

OWASSO – Grove senior Michaela Werner won her second race in as many attempts in the 2013 cross country season, beating Jenks’s Grace Barber by 10 seconds to win the Cross Country Ramble at Owasso on Thursday.

Werner finished the 3200-meter race in 12:36, leading the Lady Ridgerunners to an 11th place finish in the team standings.

The senior also won last week’s race at Tulsa Edison, the first of the season for Grove running.

Paige Stanphill was the next highest finisher for Grove, clocking a time of 15:08 for 25th place. Other finishers for Grove were Carleigh Johnson (77th), Brianna Bauer (86th), Lily Jeffries (89th) and Kali Hammock (93rd).

On the boys’ side Derek Pigsley paced the Ridgerunners with a time of 15:37, good for 15th place. Deacon Kraft finished 32nd, Jake Ingle 50th, Brandon Hankinson 97th and Gideon Carper 98th as Grove finished tenth as a team.

But it was the Kansas Comets who finished highest among Delaware County teams. Despite being one of the smallest schools in a meet made up primarily of 5A and 6A squads, the Comets had four finishers in the top 25 and finished in fifth place as a team.

Seth Whittington was second individually with a time of 14:27, 11 seconds behind Jaime Ashford of Skiatook. Brayden Brock finished 17th with a time of 15:39 while Westley Coppedge was 23rd in a time of 15:48, four seconds ahead of teammate Kalin Parsons, who was 25th.

Jenks won the girls team title with 44 points, landing five runners in the top-20. Broken Arrow won the boys title with 50 points.

Grove will run again on Sept. 19 at O’Brien Park in Tulsa in a meet hosted by Tulsa Washington High School. Kansas will run again on Sept. 14 at Sequoyah-Tahlequah
