Two first half goals were enough as the Grove Ridgerunners won their soccer season opener 2-0 at Robertson Field Monday night.
Junior Rookie Hernandez scored the first goal of the game in the 25th minute with an assist from Casen Brown.
The second score came with 11 minutes remaining in the first half with Brown again the setup man, this time connecting with Cody Heffelman to make it 2-0.
Miami had chances but couldn't convert. Freshman midfielder Nic Andres had a good look, but pushed the ball wide of the goal.
“We're struggling,” Miami coach David Douthit said. “We had enough chances. We had one early and if we had finished that one, you never know how a game will change.”
A mixup by the Wardog defense helped Hernandez score the first goal of the game.
“We're having trouble … that's how we gave up a lot of our goals in the preseason,” Douthit said. “We made some mistakes on the back and those get magnified. We changed formations in the second half and that may be something we need to stick with,” Douthit said. “We made some personnel changes. We're just not playing up to our capability. We have time to get better. We've got to get better by district play
