Grove soccer swept by Coweta in district opener

GROVE SOCCER SWEPT BY COWETA IN DISTRICT OPENER

Three goals in the first 10 minutes of the match decided the outcome of Thursday’s district opener for the Grove Ridgerunners against Coweta, while the Lady Red hung tough despite a lack of offense before succumbing to the Lady Tigers by a 4-0 score.

Grove sophomore goalie Beka Shaffar kept the Lady Tigers off the scoreboard and kept the Lady Red in the game for the first half, stopping seven straight shots, including a penalty kick, in the first 40 minutes of action.

The Lady Tigers dominated the run of play for most of the first half, playing the ball wide and attacking the flanks of the Grove defense, resulting in two corners within the first two minutes of the half.

The Lady Red began turning play eight minutes into the game, generating their best offensive chance of the night when senior midfielder Morgan Knox had her shot on goal stopped by the Coweta keeper.

Coweta (2-2) then countered with a flurry of shots on goal over the next 15 minutes, ending with Shaffar’s save on a penalty kick with 12 minutes to go before half after a Grove foul in the box.

Paige Stanphill got Grove’s only other shot on goal two minutes later off a free kick, and it looked as if the Lady Red could get to the half without any damage before a goal with six minutes left in the first half gave Coweta the lead.

The Lady Tigers wasted no time scoring in the second half, getting a goal off a corner kick 30 seconds into the half to make it 2-0. The Lady Red managed to hang around for much of the rest of the half despite not getting any shots on goal before two Coweta goals in the final 15 minutes sealed the game.

Shaffar finished with 13 saves for Grove.

The Tigers won by the same score in the boys’ game but with a very different process, scoring their first goal three minutes into the game and adding two more over the next six minutes to take a 3-0 lead with 30 minutes left in the opening half.

The Ridgerunners could not generate any offense against the speedy Tigers, getting just one shot on goal on the night when Casen Brown’s left-footed shot rebounded off the Coweta goalie and was nearly chased in by Javier Lopez with 9:30 left in the first half.

Coweta would add their fourth and final goal three minutes into the second half for the final margin.

Tyler Troppman had four saves for Grove.

Grove will travel to Metro Christian for their next game on Tuesday with the girls’ contest starting at 5 p.m.
