A tale of two halves – In the first half Grove quarterback Jake Spychalski was 13-of-20 for 215 yards and 3 touchdowns. In the second half Spychalski completed just two passes for 28 yards and was intercepted 3 times. The difference may have come down to a change in coverages by the Tigers.
“They changed things up first quarter, second quarter,” Grove head coach Dennis Millican said. “They mixed in some man coverage. They hadn’t shown that all year. Against the zone we had a lot of throwing success.”
The Tigers’ use of man coverage in the second half helped open up Grove’s running game, as the Ridgerunners gained 134 yards on the ground in the second half.
Turnovers – For yet another game the Ridgerunners had at least three turnovers, this time coughing it up four times, all in the second half. The miscues helped hold the Ridgerunners to just 7 second half points.
Missed opportunities – The Ridgerunners had four trips inside the Tigers’ 30-yard line end with zero points.
In the first half the Ridgerunners recovered a fumble at the Pryor 22 but turned the ball over on downs inside the 10. Another drive ended at the 27 when a sure touchdown pass was dropped on fourth down. Two second half drives also got close without Grove coming away with any points.
Balanced attack – Pryor quarterback Brennon Barth and running back Matt McGouldrick came into Friday’s game with 83 rushing attempts apiece on the season. Barth had 475 yards, while McGouldrick had gained 445. On Friday, McGouldrick ran for 171 yards on 25 carries, mostly on inside dives as the fullback in the option. When the Ridgerunners began collapsing on the dive, Barth ran for most of his 174 yards on 24 carries in the second half on keepers to the outside
