Notables

Turnovers – Much like last week’s game against Jay, the Ridgerunners were plagued by turnovers. A fumble on their first snuffed a scoring opportunity inside the Wagoner 20, while another fumble was returned for a touchdown. In all Grove had three turnovers last night and seven in their last two games.

Missed opportunities – In addition to the fumble on their first possession of the game, Grove had other opportunities. A Ty Phillips interception set Grove up at the Wagoner 22 late in the third quarter, but the Ridgerunners would be stopped on 4th and goal from the one.

Containing Evitt – Overall, Wagoner tailback Lawrence Evitt’s numbers – 15 carries for 202 yards and three touchdowns – were stellar. But the Ridgerunners were more effective against Wagoner’s running attack than first appears. Five of Evitt’s carries accounted for 166 of his yards, while his other 10 covered 36. Wagoner also had 8 other backs combine for 26 carries totaling 92 yards.

Jeffries scores again – After being held to just 1 catch for 22 yards in last week’s loss to Jay, senior wideout Matt Jeffries caught 4 passes for 74 against Wagoner, including a 26-yard touchdown near the end of the game. Jeffries now has 11 receptions for 198 yards and two touchdowns on the season, including 5 catches of 20 yards or more.
