Werner wins state title

WERNER WINS STATE TITLE

EDMOND – A blistering season-best time plus an unfortunate fall was enough for Grove senior Michaela Werner to win the individual title in the 5A girls cross country state championship Saturday at Edmond Santa Fe High School.

Werner passed Stilwell’s Sydney Lawrence with three-quarters of a mile left in the two-mile race on her way to a winning time of 11:48. Lawrence, who won the state title in Class 4A last year and won last week’s regional duel between the two at ORU, then fell, allowing Werner a relatively easy 40-second win.

The state title was Werner’s first in cross country after a third place finish last year. Lawrence finished second.

Paige Stanphill was Grove’s only other state qualifier in the girls race, finishing 39th in a time of 13:39.

Grove also had two qualifiers in the boys race. Derek Pigsley finished 59th in a time of 18:25, while Deacon Kraft was 70th in a time of 18:33.

Edmond Deer Creek won both state titles. Bryce Balenseifen won the boys individual title.

Bulldogs finish fifth in 4A

The Jay Bulldogs had three runners finish in the top 10 on their way to a fifth place team finish in the Class 4A competition.

Chase Brock led Jay with a fifth place finish in a time of 17:14. Trestin January and John Smith finished eighth and ninth for the Bulldogs, in times of 17:20 and 17:26. Westin Allen finished 68th and Devin Real rounded out the scoring with an 88th place finish.

The Bulldogs finished with 145 points, five behind Heritage Hall, who topped Jay for the regional title last week. Santa Fe South won the team title with 121 points.

Oologah’s Tristan Owens won the individual title with a time of 16:20.

The Lady Bulldogs’ Nashae Sharp was the highest finisher for the Jay girls, coming in at 22nd in a time of 13:01. Miranda Sloan was 68th.

Plainview won the team title with Zoie DeFehr of Weatherford winning the individual crown.
