Iverson, Werner win state titles for third straight year

IVERSON, WERNER WIN STATE TITLES FOR THIRD STRAIGHT YEAR

A pair of Grove seniors cemented their legendary status at the 5A state track championships at Yukon High School on Friday and Saturday, winning state titles for the third straight year. Emilee Iverson won the high jump for the third consecutive season, while Michaela Werner won the 3200-meter run for the third time and added a gold medal in the 1600 meters for the second straight year. The Lady Ridgerunners also got a state championship from junior Lily Jeffries, who cleared a height of 10-6 on her first try to win the pole vault. The four state titles pushed the Grove girls to a third place tie in the team standings. The Lady Ridgerunners finished with 54 points, tied with Glenpool and Del City. Shawnee was second with 59.5 points, while Edmond Deer Creek cruised to the team title with 110 points. Senior Matt Jeffries nearly made it a double in the pole vault for Grove, clearing a height of 13-6 to finish second in the 5A boys competition. Catoosa's Darren Fowler won the event with a height of 14-7. Iverson cleared a height of 5-4 to win the high jump, finishing four inches ahead of second place Camille Burge of Carl Albert. The Pitt State signee owns the school record of 5-8 set at the Pitt State meet in April. Werner dominated both of her races in her usual fashion, taking the early lead and pulling away from the field. The Oklahoma City University signee set the 5A state meet record in the 3200 for the second straight year with a winning time of 11:10.47, breaking her own record of 11:16 to finish 49 seconds ahead of second place Ashton England of Deer Creek. The time was six seconds off her own school record of 11:04. Werner won the 1600 in a time of 5:17.47, 11 seconds ahead of Sydney Lawrence of Stilwell. The senior also added a fifth place finish in the 800 meters with a personal best of 2:25.17. Freshman Keely McLaughlin added two medals in field events for the Grove girls, finishing second in the discus on Friday and fourth in the shot put on Saturday.
