After a rough day on Thursday, the Grove Ridgerunners finished off the Sperry Tournament with a wild 7-6 win over Skiatook in eight innings on Saturday.
The Ridgerunners (4-2) took an early lead, only to fall behind 5-2 before rallying in the sixth and seventh innings.
Cordale Barton got the win on the mound and drove in the game winning RBI, combining with Ty Phillips for the eight innings of pitching and for six of the Ridgerunners’ seven hits.
Senior Jake Spychalski got things going in the first inning, reaching on a two-out base hit before scoring on Phillips’s double. Barton then followed with a single to drive in Phillips for the 2-0 lead.
Skiatook (2-4) got single runs in the first two innings to tie the game before taking the lead on Bryson Sill’s solo home run to left in the bottom of the third off Phillips. The Bulldogs added two more runs in the fifth to make it a 5-2 advantage.
Kyle Good and Trent Lyle started the comeback in the top of the sixth, drawing walks and reaching second and third with two outs. A dropped third strike during Scottie Spicer’s at-bat plus and error scored both runners to cut the deficit to 5-4.
Phillips then reached on an error to start the seventh, went to third on Barton’s double and scored on a passed ball. Barton would eventually score on an error to give Grove the lead.
But Skiatook’s Dewayne Jones would lead off the bottom of the seventh with a single, scoring on Caleb Sparks’s one-out base hit to send the game to extra innings.
Phillips reached on a two-out single in the eighth, his third hit of the game, and Barton followed with his third hit and second double to drive home the winning run.
Barton then pitched around a lead off error in the bottom of the inning to preserve the win, allowing four hits and three unearned runs in four innings of work.
The Ridgerunners took the early lead in Thursday’s 10-8 loss to Fort Gibson, only to see the Tigers rally for six runs in the fourth to take the lead for good.
Spychalski had two hits and three RBIs, including a two-run home run in the third that gave Grove a 4-0 lead.
Fort Gibson followed their huge fourth inning with two more in the fifth and a run each in the sixth and seventh innings.
Grove rallied with four in the sixth to cut the deficit to 9-8, but could get no closer.
Scottie Spicer had two runs batted in.
There would be no comeback in the Ridgerunners’ second loss of the day, a 13-4 defeat at the hands of Dewey.
The Bulldoggers scored in each of the first four innings to take a 9-0 lead. Grove would score three in the bottom of the fourth, but Dewey added four in the sixth to put the game away.
Phillips and Good each had two hits and an RBI for the Ridgerunners in that contest.
As of press time Monday the Ridgerunners were scheduled to travel to Enid, where they will take on the Plainsmen on Monday before playing Chisholm on Tuesday
