Grove took advantage of six Pryor errors to upset the Tigers, 7-4, in pool play of the Tiger-Zebra Classic Thursday.
The northerly wind was certainly a factor for both teams at American Legion Memorial Field, but several of Pryor’s routine throws found the dugout or the backstop and the Ridgerunners did not waste the opportunities.
After spotting the Tigers (7-4) a 3-0 lead after three innings, Grove plated three of its own in the top of the fourth thanks to four throwing errors from Tiger infielders.
After Cordale Barton retired three Tigers in order in the bottom of the inning, Barton and Scotty Spicer recorded RBI singles to give the RIdgerunners their first lead of the game (5-3) in the top of the fifth.
Grove added runs in the sixth and seventh innings.
Jake Spychalski relieved Barton in the bottom of the sixth with the bases loaded and one out. Pryor’s Gaige Mendivil batted Brennon Barth in on a fielder’s choice before Bradley Nixon grounded out to get the Ridgerunners out of the jam.
Barton (1-1) allowed five hits in 5 1/3 innings. Spychalski picked up his first save and struck out Nate Wolfe to end the game.
Anthony Martinez absorbed the loss for Pryor. Martinez struck out four and allowed two hits before Bradley Nixon relieved him to start the sixth inning.
Barth had a pair of singles for the Tigers.
In the second game, Skiatook shut out Grove behind a complete game from righthander Korey Wilson.
The Bulldogs (3-9) poured on four runs in the top of the fourth inning on a pair of RBI doubles off the bats of Baylor Jenkins and Billy Beyen. Steven Upton added an RBI single.
Wilson allowed four hits.
Grove (6-6) will play Joplin (Mo.) at 2 p.m. Friday in its pool finale.
