GROVE – A total of 20 turnovers was too much to overcome as the Grove Ridgerunners fell short in a 63-52 loss to the Pryor Tigers in the season finale for both teams Monday.
The Ridgerunners (4-18) had 13 turnovers in the first half, yet stayed in the game thanks to the offense of Spencer Londagin and Jake Spychalski. The duo combined for 26 of Grove’s 30 first half points as the Ridgerunners rallied from an early deficit to trail 34-30 at the half.
“Too many turnovers,” Grove head coach Zach Trimble said. “We had 13 in the first half and I’d venture to say that of those 13, six or seven led to fast-break layups. Those are points in the first half we shouldn’t give up.”
The Ridgerunners fell behind early, trailing 9-2 midway through the first quarter with four turnovers before Londagin and Spychalski responded, combining for all 10 of Grove’s points in the opening eight minutes.
Londagin would then get hot from the outside in the second quarter, knocking down a trio of three-pointers. Spychlaski added 7 points in the period as Grove started with an 8-2 run to get within one with 5:29 left in the half.
Grove would rally again in the third period, tying the score at 37 midway through the period and taking the lead on Londagin’s only second half field goal with 1:35 left in the quarter. Pryor would answer with an 8-0 run to take a 49-43 lead with 5:34 to play.
“It was the same thing as the last game [against Pryor],” Trimble said. “Spencer had a real good first half then they didn’t let him catch the ball. They were more aware of where he was at and didn’t let him get wide-open looks. We had some guys hit some shots; Austin Cross hit a big shot; Ty Phillips hit a big shot, but it just came down to too many turnovers.”
Tyler Busch broke Grove’s four-minute scoring drought with a three-point play to close the gap to three, but the Tigers answered with six more points in the next minute then hit enough free throws to put the game away for their fifth win in their last six. The Tigers hit 9-of-14 from the free throw line in the fourth quarter.
Londagin and Spychalski each finished with 18 points, with Spychalski adding 12 rebounds. Senior Tyler Busch had 7 points, 4 rebounds and 4 assists in his final home game.
In addition to Barnett’s 25, Pryor big man Ryan Ogg added 15 points and 11 rebounds for the Tigers.
Grove will open the playoffs against Coweta on Friday at 8 p.m. in Coweta.
