Struggling to shoot the ball, the Grove Lady Ridgerunners scored their lowest point total of the season and had their five-game winning streak snapped with a 31-24 loss to McDonald County on Senior Night.
Emilee Iverson led the Lady Ridgerunners (10-10) with 13 points, but Grove could only get one three-point basket in the first quarter and made three shots from the field in the first half, trailing 16-8 at the break.
“We just came out tonight and laid an egg on the shooting part of it and just couldn’t get anything going,” Grove head coach Richard Bassett said. “I don’t know if we’re tired, but our focus hasn’t been very good at times. We’ve got to have more intensity against Pryor. We’ve got to have a little more kick in our step.”
Grove will close out the regular season on Monday at Pryor, but on Friday it was the Lady Mustangs’ Preslea Reece and Nichole Ickes that did the damage, combining for 24 points.
“Number 10 (Ickes) is really good and number 25 (Reece), she was a beast,” Bassett said. “They’re a good team. They came out in man and locked us up.”
Reece scored 9 of her game-high 16 points in the second half. Iverson led the Lady Ridgerunners back into the game with 8 third quarter points, getting a three-point play to make it 17-16 with 2:31 left in the third.
But Grove would score one point over the next five minutes, and the Lady Mustangs would stretch the lead back to 10 early in the fourth quarter, holding on despite hitting just 4-of-12 free throws in the final period.
Ickes added 8 points, 4 rebounds and 3 assists for the Lady Mustangs. Libby Morris had 7 points and 3 rebounds for Grove.
