JAY – In one of the biggest area upsets of the season the Jay Lady Bulldogs overcame an 8-point halftime deficit and outscored Grove 11-7 in overtime for a 53-49 home win over the Lady Ridgerunners Tuesday.
Chloe Price led the Lady Bulldogs (3-16) with 17 points while Ashley Wilkes added 14.
Sophomore Libby Morris and junior Justina Mouse picked up the slack, combining for 25 points.
But Jay went on an 8-1 to start the second half to close Grove’s lead to one with just under three minutes left in the third quarter before eventually taking a 37-36 lead by the end of the period.
The two teams would trade the lead four times over the final four minutes of the game before the Lady Bulldogs took a 52-49 lead with 3.7 seconds left. After Jay missed at the free throw line, Grove’s Emilee Iverson tied the game with a three to send the game into overtime.
The Lady Bulldogs built a seven-point lead in the extra period but Grove, playing without Mouse and Taylor Dodson – who both fouled out in regulation – would get within two after a three by Karah Bassett and another basket by Morris with two minutes to play
But Jay would hang onto their lead this time for the upset win, despite being outrebounded 35-22 for the game. The Lady Bulldogs hit 6-of-10 from beyond the three-point line on the night, with Jenny Earp hitting three of those to finish the game with 9 points. Adrianna Cornell also added 9 points for the Lady Bulldogs, who won for the second time in their last 16 games.
Morris led Grove with 15 points while Mouse finished with 10. Iverson added 9 points while Dodson and Jeffries scored 8 points each for the Lady Ridgerunners, who will play at Catoosa on Friday.
Jay will travel to Wagoner on Friday.
