Jay shuts down Grove

JAY SHUTS DOWN GROVE

JAY – A three run first inning as the Jay Lady Bulldogs held off Grove for a 4-1 home win on Thursday.

The Lady Bulldogs (2-5) used three hits and a walk in their first at-bat of the game to take the lead for good. Linzy Brock opened the inning with a base hit and starting pitcher Haley Dry followed with a walk.

Shortstop Mason Jeffries then drove in the game’s first run with a base hit to leftfield. Jeffries and Dry would advance to second and third on the throw home. Dry would later score on a groundout by Kaitlin Taylor and Jeffries would score Tommie Jeffries single.

The Lady Red (1-10) were repeatedly unable to take advantage of opportunities with runners in scoring position, as Dry repeatedly wriggled out of trouble over the first three innings.

Grove would get two hits and a Jay error in the top of the first but couldn’t score. Paige Miller started the game with a single and moved to second on Taylor Rupe’s sacrifice bunt. Libby Morris then doubled to right field but Miller was caught in a rundown on the third base line and tagged out for the second out of the inning. Kaitlynn Smith would reach on an error but Dry would end the inning with a strikeout.

Grove would get four hits but only one run in the second inning when Gabi Fields drove home Ciera Christy with a base hit up the middle. The Lady Red would eventually leave the bases loaded then followed that by getting runners on second and third to start the third. But a line drive to short was followed by two strikeouts to end the threat.

Jay would add another run in the fourth inning to complete the scoring.

Grove will host Coweta in a District 5A-4 contest on Tuesday beginning at 5 p.m. Jay will play again on Tuesday when they travel to Catoosa.
