CV'S JUNIORS DELIVER SENIOR NIGHT VICTORY

Senior night in Witmer saw Conestoga Valley bid farewell to six young women, key members of an undefeated side that leads Section One of the Lancaster-Lebanon League. But it was a quartet of juniors who figured in the final tabulation as the Buckskins (8-0 league, 13-0 overall) defeated Warwick, 2-0, Tuesday night. Emily Clapper’s finish of Megan Stone’s drop pass broke the scoring ice in the 29th minute. Then Alexis Spencer iced the game with 15:46 to play, pumping home a continuation of play in the box following the Bucks fourth corner kick of the match. The early script of the match was a battle of back lines. Center backs Kelly Hunt and Emma Oberholtzer were nearly impenetrable for the Warriors (3-5, 4-8) as they pinched off or tracked down the Bucks attack. At the other end of the pitch, CV’s foursome of Adalee Broadbent and Maggie Wang and Spencer and Jacque Thornton, with Angela Edgell rotating in on the wing, provided keeper Lauren Yoder a nearly-quiet evening. “We’ve played together for, I don’t know how many years, “ Yoder said. “Getting that (feeling of) comfort has really helped us grow. “It’s really easy (for me) to step out and cover what needs to be covered.” She stopped Rene Ross’ free kick in the 14th minute, saved a Lily Shaffer opportunity in the 62nd and, in the 69th minute, came off her line to cover Ross’ pass to Abby Rodgers before Rodgers could secure it. On CV’s sixth opportunity, just after Hunt had cleared away Broadbent’s pass to Gianna Yurchak, Emma Weirich sent a cross back into the box, finding Serina Blessing’s foot. Blessing miskicked, the ball coming back to Stone who dropped it to Clapper, standing 16 yards out. “Megan laid it off, she passed it to me, in the gap between two (defenders),” Clapper said. “I just knew I had to hit it before they closed it down.” Down a goal, the Warriors upped the ante in the second half, pacewise, an intensity matched by the Bucks. On their third corner in a five-minute period, the Bucks’ Jess Hood served across the goal mouth, the ball coming to Leah Amico in the right slot. She centered to Yurchak, who dropped off to Spencer. “I just had to make sure that I was open,” Spencer said, “and I was at the right spot at the right time so I could finish it.” Spencer’s finish finished the night, propelling the Bucks forward as the regular season hits the home stretch. There’s an evening trip down the Old Philly Pike to McCaskey on Thursday. Then they return home Saturday morning home for a showdown with current section runner-up Manheim Township. “That will be a challenge,” Yoder said. “Holding it together (in the back) will be a key for us.”
