Central gets leg up on Urbana

CENTRAL GETS LEG UP ON URBANA

CHAMPAIGN — In an effort to prevent their second consecutive home game from being negatively impacted by bad weather, Champaign Central officials moved Friday’s game against rival Urbana at Tommy Stewart Field up 90 minutes to 5:30 p.m. Unfortunately for the Maroons and Tigers, Mother Nature wasn’t accommodating as their matchup was suspended with Central leading 35-0 at the half. The two teams will resume the game at 9 a.m. Saturday. “We thought we had a good plan going at 5:30, and for the most part it seemed like we did, but Mother Nature won again,” Central athletic director John Woods said shortly before 9 p.m., when the decision was made to suspend the game. A severe thunderstorm rolled through the area just after 9 p.m. Players from both teams crammed into locker rooms inside Centennial High School for about 90 minutes during the delay. Central’s scheduled home opener on Sept. 4 against Dunlap was pushed back a day because of severe storms as well. “Waiting stinks; it is the worst thing. It’s tough on the kids, too. There’s nowhere to be comfortable,” Central coach Nate Albaugh said. “It’s tough mentally, but our kids are pretty mentally tough, and we appreciate that about them. We feel good about our chances coming back out (Saturday).” The Maroons struck early and frequently on Friday as Matt Brown scored on a 7-yard run — the first of his two touchdown dashes — less than two minutes in to open a 7-0 lead. Quarterback Walker Stillman, Josh Parker and Bradley Dee also added touchdown runs as Central entered the locker room with all the momentum. The question now is if the Maroons carry it into Saturday to hold on for the win. “I don’t know that I know the answer to that,” Albaugh said. “I do know we’ve got a mature group of guys that are pretty serious about their season. I don’t foresee any problems about them being ready in the morning. “They’re excited about their game, they’re excited about their season and I think they’ll be excited about coming out to play in the morning.”
